Officials say one woman is dead and twelve others are homeless after a fire consumed part of a Springfield home early Sunday morning. Firefighters responded to the three-story residence around 4:00 a.m.
According to NECN, one resident was found unconscious by firefighters and transported to Bay State Medical Center, where she later died. Officials say she was discovered after a woman attempting to escape through a window told them her mother was still inside.
The third floor of the building was destroyed by flames while the rest of the building was mostly damaged by water and smoke, MassLive reports.

It remains unclear how the blaze began, and the incident remains under investigation.
