A “humor algorithm” has found that Boston ranks as the second funniest of America’s 50 largest cities in terms of both quantity and quality of humor, according to the New York Times. Chicago came in first place.
The finding comes from a study by experts at the Humor Research Lab at the University of Colorado, led by professor Peter McGraw.
[McGraw's] findings were drawn from surveys of residents (on the prevalence of humor in their daily lives) and of comedians, number of visits to comedy websites, tweets, radio stations, comedy clubs per square mile and native-born comedians per capita.
Boston residents were found to be the most likely to attend comedy shows, and the algorithm determined the city has a split comedy personality mixing dry high-brow with rowdy low-brow humor. Famous stand-up comedians like Louis C.K., Conan O’Brien, and Jay Leno are also all from the Boston area.
Atlanta, Portland, and Washington rounded out the rest of the top five.
