About that wiffle ball game...

By Matt Viser, reporter August 21, 07 11:25 AM

The candidates have had more than a dozen debates, and now there seems to be a growing appetite for some fun and games in the Fifth Congressional District.

The Globe reported last week that Independent candidate Patrick Murphy had challenged Democrat Jamie Eldridge to a game of Wiffle ball.

"We can all embrace the idea that this contest could determine the 5th District's next congressman," Murphy wrote recently on his blog, adding that his campaign "is eager to demonstrate our Wiffling prowess."

"We accept the challenge," Eldridge, a state representative from Acton, told the Globe. "Absolutely."

Now Niki Tsongas is weighing in and accepting the challenge, too, telling the Boston Daily blog, "We’re all grassroots candidates, so we’re used to playing in the grass. I’d play."

It should be said that Tsongas is about three decades older than Eldridge and Murphy, additional years that she argues politically give her experience that would help her in Washington. But it might not help so much along those base paths.

So how about it, James Micelli and Eileen Donoghue?
