Sisters in convent keep faith in Red Sox
By Donovan Slack, 10/10/2003
Who: Sisters of the Episcopalian Society of St. Margaret's Convent, Roxbury
Where they watch the games: on a donated 36-inch television in the second floor common room of the convent
Combined years of devotion to the team: more than 240
Typical game-day food: vegetables and grain, including homemade breads and granola
Favorite player: Tim Wakefield (even before Game 1)
What worries them: Nomar Garciaparra's prebatting rituals, which they find too time-consuming
What they do when not watching baseball: minister at Suffolk County Jail, tutor at Nathan Hale elementary school in Roxbury, provide spiritual direction and offer retreats
Evidence of their compassion: will pray for comfort for the Yankees when they lose (not until they lose though)
Evidence that they may be getting carried away: when they arrived 20 minutes late to 8:30 p.m. chapel Wednesday, after watching early innings of Game 1, Sister Grace Gallant remarked, "God will understand, God is a Red Sox fan."
