Former Watertown High track captain Nick Goodman has made steady progress as a freshman runner at Boston University.
Goodman, who finished second at the State Indoor Championships in the 1,000 meters as a high school senior, missed the outdoor season last year because of a hip injury that also sidelined him during the 2003 college cross-country season.
''I wanted to ease him into training, rather than just throw him in the deep end of the pool and see if he could swim," said BU track coach Bruce Lehane. ''I think that was a good move as Nick gradually built up his conditioning through the fall and had a secure base of fitness to race off of during the indoor season. He was then able to race more aggressively, as he knew he had greater endurance in the closing stages of races."
Goodman won the 800 meters at the America East Conference Indoor Championships in February with a time of 1 minute 54.17 seconds and also anchored BU's winning 4 x 800 meter relay team the next weekend at the New England Indoor Championships with a 1:52.10 leg. Goodman placed third in the 800 meters at the America East Outdoor Championships May 1-2 in 1:55.70.
''Nick is a strong kid with good speed and surprising endurance," Lehane said. ''I anticipate that he will develop into one of the very best in the Northeast."
