N.J. teenager is dead after canoe flips in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine -- A New Jersey teenager who came to Maine to spend a week with nine friends at a camp on Millinocket Lake died in a boating accident Tuesday night, the Maine Warden Service said.

The victim was identified as Michael Schafer, 19, of Atco, N.J.

Schafer

came to the lake on Sunday. He and friends Nicholas Castine and Lauren Schenk, both 19 and of Hammonton, N.J., went out on the lake in an aluminum canoe Tuesday night and paddled to Reed Island, an uninhabited island about 800 yards offshore, Sergeant Pat Dorian said.

The wind picked up and on their return trip the canoe took on water and capsized in the 54-degree water about 100 yards from the island, he said. Castine and Schenk swam to the island and called for help, but Schafer did not make it to shore. None of the boaters was wearing a life jacket, and they did not take any in their canoe.
