Newton lauded for usage of solar power

Newton, through a partnership with the Green Decade Coalition, has been given an award by the US Department of Energy for its efforts in solar power.

Four years ago, the city joined the Million Solar Roofs Partnership, a group aiming to add 1 million solar-powered buildings by 2010.

Each year, the partnership hands out nine awards to organizations working toward adding solar power.

Newton received the Gauntlet Award, which recognizes achievement ''despite many barriers, obstacles, and setbacks."

The Green Decade Coalition is developing a solar-energy kiosk for the Newton Community Service Center and has implemented several programs that encourage children and adults to conserve energy. In an informal survey, more than 100 homes using solar panels were identified.
