Louis Centrella, 85, health inspector

MEDFORD -- Louis A. Centrella, 85, a retired health inspector, died Monday at Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford.

Mr. Centrella was born in Medford and lived there for the majority of his life.

A man of many occupations, Mr. Centrella opened the city's first driving school, Medford Auto School. He also worked as a salesman for several local auto dealerships, including Bellotti Oldsmobile and Walton Buick. For 30 years, he managed Celeste Apartments on the Fellsway.

Mr. Centrella also served as a justice of the peace and constable for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. During the 1980s, he served as an assistant funeral director at the Dello Russo Funeral Home. Mr. Centrella completed his career as an inspector for Medford's Board of Health.

Mr. Centrella was the husband of the late Ruth A. (Lucier) Centrella.

He leaves a son, Louis of Newburyport; one daughter, Judy Foppiano of Billerica; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Mazzarini, assembler; at 87

WOBURN -- Phyllis C. (Costabile) Mazzarini, 87, of Woburn, an assembler, died Oct. 17 at Winchester Hospital.

Mrs. Mazzarini was born in Italy and moved to the United States with her family at age 2. She was raised in Boston and lived in Woburn for 33 years.

Mrs. Mazzarini had worked as an assembler-machinist for 45 years. She continued to work until her 70s.

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, and sewing.

She was the wife of the late James A. Mazzarini.

Mrs. Mazzarini leaves two sons, Anthony of Wilmington and James of Stoneham; two sisters, Anna Costabile of Woburn and Rita Luongo of Rochester, N.H.; and two brothers, Frank Costabile of Hudson and Joseph Costabile of Wilmington.

Margaret Burgess, retired nurse; at 81

METHUEN -- Margaret (Privitera) Burgess, 81, of Methuen, a registered nurse, died Oct. 10 at Mariner Healthcare in Methuen.

Born and raised in Methuen, she was a resident of the city for most of her life.

Mrs. Burgess graduated from New Hampshire Hospital as a registered nurse in 1944. She also obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from New England College in 1972.

Mrs. Burgess worked as a staff nurse at the former Clover Hill Hospital in Lawrence. She served as assistant head nurse at the former Hale Hospital in Haverhill and, in 1950, joined Bon Secour Hospital in Methuen. She worked in many different capacities at Bon Secour, which later became the Caritas Holy Family Hospital.

Mrs. Burgess was a member of St. Monica's Church in Methuen.

She was the wife of the late Louis Burgess.

William A. Boutin, carpenter; at 84

METHUEN -- William A. "Tony" Boutin, 84, of Methuen, a carpenter, died Oct. 11 in Stowe, Vt.

Mr. Boutin was born, raised, and educated in Somerville.

During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard in the South Pacific.

Mr. Boutin was employed as a union carpenter until his retirement in 1982. He also worked as a teacher's aide in construction at the Greater Lawrence Vocational High School.

He was the husband of Doris (Gaudreau) Boutin for 58 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Boutin leaves a son, William F. of Windham, N.H.; a daughter, Debra Jackson of Salem, N.H.; and a granddaughter.

Richard O'Malley, lithographer; at 81

LOWELL -- Richard J. O'Malley Jr., 81, of Lowell, a lithographer, died Oct. 13 at Lowell General Hospital.

A resident of Lowell for most of his life, he attended Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College.

Mr. O'Malley served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a lithographer for 35 years at Courier Corp. until his retirement.

Mr. O'Malley was was instrumental in the formation of the Silver Mittens, a youth boxing tournament in Lowell.

He was the husband of the late Mary Louise (Lyons) O'Malley.

Mr. O'Malley leaves a son, Richard J. III, of Montville, Maine; a sister, Sissy O'Malley-Grand of Lowell; a brother, James B. of York, Maine; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
