John Richards, 69; was shipping clerk

WALPOLE -- John Clark Richards, a retired shipper and receiver for the Barnstead Steel Co. in West Roxbury, died Oct. 22 at Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was 69.

Mr. Richards was born in Cranston, R.I., and raised and educated in Lincoln, R.I. He moved to Walpole in 1967.

He worked as a shipper and receiver for the Barnstead Steel Co. for more than 20 years, retiring when the company moved.

Mr. Richards leaves two sons, Patrick of Norwood and Shawn of Walpole; three daughters, Barbara Jean Hart of Hanover, Ann Marie Richards of Houston, and Sandy Benedetti of Walpole; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Caroline Pye, 82; day-care provider

WEYMOUTH -- Caroline E. (Chase) Pye, a day-care provider who worked as a nurse during World War II, died Oct. 19 at Hancock Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Quincy. She was 82.

Born and raised in Harwichport, she graduated from Harwich High School in 1941. She underwent training in the Cadet Nurse Corps for her service in World War II. She moved to South Weymouth in 1948 and worked for many years as a day-care provider at her home.

She was a past president of George R. Bean Post No. 79 Women's Auxiliary in South Weymouth, a past member of Mary Martha Guild at the Church of the Holy Nativity, and a Sunday school teacher at the church for many years.

Mrs. Pye leaves two sons, James R. of Sandwich and John W. of Brockton; two daughters, Martha S. Mulholland of Abington and Ann E. Pye of South Weymouth; two brothers, Roscoe and Robert Chase, both of Harwich; a sister, Florence Young of Dennisport; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Robert O'Brien, 88; was postal official

ROCKLAND -- Robert W. O'Brien, a retired assistant postmaster, died last Sunday at Brockton Hospital after a short illness. He was 88.

Born in Rockland, Mr. O'Brien was a lifelong resident of the town, graduating from Rockland High School. He later graduated from the Brockton Business School. Mr. O'Brien was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the Rockland Post of the American Legion.

He first worked as a substitute mail carrier at the Rockland post office in 1937, and became a full-time mail carrier in 1939. After his service in the war, he became a mail clerk in 1948 and became superintendent of the mail in 1951.

He was promoted to assistant postmaster in 1953, retiring from that position in 1971.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Rockland and was a former Eucharistic minister there. He was a member of AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Mr. O'Brien leaves four sons, Robert J. of Hanson, John F. of Downingtown, Pa., Peter of Whitman, and Michael J. of Rockland; a daughter, Joanne E. Sartori of Andover; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Caroline Fisher, 80; was a homemaker

STOUGHTON -- Caroline W. (Egersheim) Fisher, a Stoughton homemaker, died in her daughter's home in Stoughton on Monday after a period of failing health. She was 80.

Born and educated in Boston, Mrs. Fisher was a resident of Stoughton since 1941. She married the late Walter K. Fisher, and was devoted to her family. She loved playing bingo at Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton.

Mrs. Fisher leaves a son, Robert W. of Stoughton; five daughters, Evelyn Clairmont of Stoughton, Mary McDow of Grafton, N.H., and Carol MacNeil, Sharon Corkum, and Darlene Weaver, all of Stoughton; two sisters, Barbara Bolduc of Brockton and Emma Bohn of Hyde Park; 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
