4 arrested during parade are arraigned

Four men arrested during Saturday's Red Sox parade were arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court and released, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office said. Robert J. Russell, 24, of Chicopee was charged with public drinking and disturbing the peace. Thomas Carey, 18, of Chelmsford, was charged with trespassing for entering North Station after it had closed. Wayne Monroe, 41, and Gary Fields, 36, were charged with affray after MBTA police saw them fighting in front of a large crowd. More defendants are scheduled to be arraigned today, David Procopio said.

Sinkhole halts Green Line service

A sinkhole under the Green Line tracks in Brighton prompted the T to suspend trolley service between Washington Street and Boston College. Riders will have to take buses along the mile-long section of the B line branch, which includes four stations. Joe Pesaturo, spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said the sinkhole was first noticed yesterday at midday, and it was initially about 2 feet in diameter. A trolley operator reported the problem and trolley service was halted. The sinkhole then grew and expanded under both the eastbound and westbound tracks at Sutherland Road in Brighton. The cause was believed to be a broken sewer line 17 feet underground, and a Boston Water and Sewer Commission worker rushed to the scene. Service probably will be restored tomorrow, Pesaturo said.

Man says he lied during '99 mob trial

A Boston man has pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice for lying on the stand during a 1999 mob trial. Timothy L. O'Toole Jr., 60, pleaded guilty on Friday to eight counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for giving false and evasive testimony during the 1999 federal trial of 15 men indicted for their part in a Mafia power struggle, prosecutors said. O'Toole was stabbed in 1994 during the war between those loyal to Patriarca family boss Francis P. Salemme Jr. and a dissident faction. Fifteen members of that faction were indicted in 1997 on murder, attempted murder, and other charges. O'Toole faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison on the obstruction count, and five years on each of the perjury counts. He also faces three years probation and a $250,000 fine on each count. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 16. (AP)

Two people were injured and at least 12 were left homeless when a suspicious fire broke out in a triple-decker on Windsor Street last night around 11:30 p.m., fire officials said. The fire caused severe damage to the triple-decker and the house next door, said fire officials. Cambridge Fire Chief Gerald Reardon said the fire started in the alley between the two buildings and caused an estimated $400,000 to $500,000 in damage. Officials said a man and a woman were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The unidentified man also suffered burns.

SPRINGFIELD

Shooting suspect held without bail

A Springfield man was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty yesterday to charges of murdering 19-year-old Daylan Shepard, who was gunned down in July almost two months after his twin brother was killed in another shooting. Porfirio Morales, 25, was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge in Springfield District Court. Hampden District Attorney William Bennett said Morales saw Shepard walking down the street, pulled his car over, and opened fire. ''He shot numerous times at the victim," with a 9mm pistol, Bennett said. Although police say Morales was the gunman, another Springfield man, Leo White, 20, will be arraigned on murder charges later this week in connection with the shooting, Bennett said.

Couple charged in death of child, 3

A Woonsocket couple were ordered held without bail yesterday on charges in the beating death of a 3-year-old boy under their supervision. They could face more charges. Police received a 911 call about 3:40 a.m. on Saturday concerning a child at Walnut Hill Apartments. Responding officers found the boy had been severely injured, police spokesman Luke Gallant told The Call of Woonsocket. The boy was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where he died on Sunday.
