From Beacon Hill perch, Mihos enjoys views while shaping campaign vision

The Republicans can have their convention, and Kerry Healey can campaign all she wants for the governor's job. No matter: Christy Mihos already has a great office on Beacon Hill.

The other day, the independent candidate for governor gazed out the window of his new campaign office and took in the view: the Boston Common and its budding trees, Park Street and its rush of traffic, and, towering above it all, the grand old State House, its golden dome shining like the sun itself.

Mihos, who bolted the GOP to run as an independent, looked deeply satisfied as he surveyed it all.

Since his campaign moved into its luxe new quarters, spread over three floors at 9 Park Street (it's just above Barbara Lynch's celebrated restaurant), Mihos has spent hours making calls by the front window in the glow of the dome.

Sometimes he becomes a live billboard for his campaign, waving to the people on their way to Park Street Station.

''You can reach out to a lot of people here," he said.

It is also, he says, inspiring.

''We sort of like the neighborhood," he said with a grin.

Mihos's office is not the biggest or the most expensive in this year's race. He pays $10,293.75 a month for his 5,341 square feet, spread over three floors at 9 Park Street. (It is just above the restaurant.) The campaign of Kerry Healey and Reed Hillman pays $11,000 for her campaign office on Merrimack Street, near North Station. (At this stage in the race, they are the only campaign with two candidates.)

But she looks out on a warehouse and a couple of pubs.

The Democrats, for their part, overlook such inspiring sights as an office building (Tom Reilly, from his Congress Street HQ), a parking lot (Deval Patrick, in Charlestown) and a large sandpile (Chris Gabrieli, from the Big Dig-adjacent Canal Street).
