Thanks to the generosity of donors, Arc of the South Shore has completed a $500,000 expansion and renovation project of its Weymouth headquarters. The nonprofit agency, in existence since 1951 providing advocacy and support to children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities, has made its home at Weymouth Harbor since the 1970s, and now boasts a 1,200-square-foot addition.
``The renovation has already enhanced our organization," said David Calhoun, former executive director of the agency who oversaw the renovation. ``It's boosted the morale of our members and staff, reenergizing our mission to provide the highest quality services and advocacy."
A capital campaign raised nearly $1.5 million in donations from individuals and businesses and via grants and money from foundations, said acting director Anne Holton. Arc of the South Shore serves more than 1,500 individuals and families in communities in Greater Boston and on Cape Cod.
With the capital campaign money, Calhoun said, the agency not only paid for the expansion and renovation of its headquarters but will enhance existing programming. Fund-raising will continue with the agency's annual golf tournament and dinner-dance, he said.
``We greatly appreciate all the hard work and gracious support of our board members," he said. ``We are especially appreciative of the consummate dedication of Richard Frye of Braintree and James Lawson of Norwell, as they were the influential architects of the capital campaign."
The Arc of the South Shore has scheduled an open house Sept. 21 at its expanded location at 371 River St. in Weymouth. For more information, call 781-335-3023 or visit www.arcsouthshore.org.
