Margaret Buckley, 83

Business owner

PEABODY -- Margaret Marie (Hingston) Buckley , 83, of Peabody , a former business owner, died Oct. 5 at her home. She was 83.

Mrs. Buckley was born in Peabody, and raised in Danvers, where she graduated from the former Holten High School . She attended the former Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School in Boston, concentrating her studies in office machinery and accounting. The family returned to Peabody in 1938 where she has since lived.

During World War II, Mrs. Buckley worked as an accountant at General Electric in Lynn for three years. She also worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad in Boston , now part of the Pan Am Railways network, for a few years.

Mrs. Buckley was the owner and operator of a tannery supply company, Larrabee and Hingston, in Peabody , a business that was started by her father. She stayed with the company from 1957 until her retirement in 1997.

During her youth, she summered at Rye Beach. She enjoyed music, rug-hooking, baking, and being a fervent member of the Republican Party.

She loved watching sports on television and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show . Family members said Mrs. Buckley had a special love for the many dogs that she had over the years.

Mrs. Buckley leaves her husband, Stephen T. Jr., of Peabody; two sons, Stephen T. III and Timothy S. , both of Peabody ; two daughters, Marie E. Bishop and Joanne M. Buckley , both of Peabody ; a brother, George Hingston of Manchester-by-the-Sea ; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday in St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Peabody . Burial was in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Danvers .

Charles Tallman, retired engineer; 91
RYE, N.H. -- Charles V. Tallman , a retired chemical engineer, died Oct. 3 at his home in Rye Beach. He was 91.

Mr. Tallman was born in Providence , R.I., and attended Brown University , graduating with a degree in chemistry.

He married Louise Heermance in 1943, and a year later the two moved to Candia, N.H. He had been living in Rye since 1963.

Mr. Tallman worked as a chemical engineer for the former United States Rubber Co. for most of his career, but later worked for Sanders Associates in Nashua, now part of BAE Systems Electronics and Integrated Solutions.

Mr. Tallman was a member of the Rye Congregational Church and was a life member of both the Rye Lions Club and the American Chemical Society . He was also a former chairman of the board of the New Hampshire Association for the Blind and served on the Rye Planning Board and the Rockingham Regional Planning Commission .

He also was active in the Appalachian Mountain Club, and enjoyed skiing, boating and forest management.

Besides his wife of 62 years, Mr. Tallman leaves three sons, Peter of Longmont, Colo. , Arthur of Portsmouth, N.H., and Stephen of Stratham, N.H.; two daughters, Elizabeth of Greenland, N.H., and Judith of Rye, N.H. ; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday in Rye Congregational Church. Burial was in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown, R.I.

Edmund Graczyk, Salem teacher; 95
SALEM -- Edmund J. Graczyk , of Salem , who spent three decades as a coach and physical education teacher in the Salem public schools, died Oct. 5 at Grosvenor Park Nursing Center in Salem . He was 95.

Mr. Graczyk was born in Salem. He graduated from Salem High School , where in 1929 he was captain of the undefeated football team. He is a graduate of the University of Miami.

He worked as an insurance agent for the Prudential Life Insurance Co. from 1937 until 1944, when he turned to teaching.

During the 1944-45 school year, he was the physical education teacher for Salem public schools, and taught drafting in the evenings. In 1946, Mr. Graczyk taught physical education at Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Maine , where he also coached the football, basketball, and baseball teams.

He briefly worked at the United Shoe Machine Corp. as a detail illustrator and worked in Boston as a draftsman and consultant.

Mr. Graczyk returned to the Salem public school system in 1949 as a physical education teacher, and remained there until his retirement in 1976, coaching Salem High School freshmen football from 1966 to 1968. In 2001, he was inducted into the Salem High School Hall of Fame.

Mr. Graczyk was the director of boys programs at the House of Seven Gables in Salem from 1936 to 1958. He was a past president of the St. John the Baptist Holy Name Society .

In his spare time, he enjoyed painting portraits and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Following his retirement, Mr. Graczyk lived in Boynton Beach, Fla. for 21 years.

He lived with his daughter in Danvers for the past five years.

He was married to Helen M. (Filip) , who died in 1993.

Mr. Graczyk leaves a daughter, Mary Ann Sullivan of Danvers ; a brother, Clarence of Danvers ; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was said Tuesday in St. John the Baptist Church in Salem . Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery in Salem .

Hy Levenson, 91; former drummer
PEABODY -- Hy Levenson of Peabody , a Raytheon research machinist and musician, died Oct. 7 at Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody after an illness. He was 91.

Mr. Levenson was born in Boston, where he was educated. He later lived in Revere before moving to Peabody 46 years ago.

He was a research machinist for the space program with Raytheon Co . in Andover for more than 30 years, until his retirement.

Mr. Levenson also was a professional musician. He played drums for several band leaders in the Boston area, including Vaughn Monroe , whom he toured with here and overseas.

Mr. Levenson was a member of the Boston Musicians Union for 50 years. He also belonged to the North Shore Musicians Union . In his later years, he turned his talents to playing the piano.

Fitness was important to Mr. Levenson and he exercised daily with weights.

He was married to Madelyne C. (McGee) .

Mr. Levenson leaves two daughters, Carol Remillard and Karen Levenson , both of Peabody ; a son, Robert P. of Daly City, Calif. ; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday in Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home , Peabody . Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody .
