Melrose names tennis courts for ex-mayor

Melrose recently dedicated the newly refurbished tennis courts on Tremont Street in honor of a former mayor, Richard D. Lyons.

The dedication came in an Oct. 27 ceremony at which a plaque was unveiled displaying the city facility's new name: the Mayor Richard D. Lyons Community Tennis Courts.

Officials have noted that Lyons, who was present at the ceremony with family and friends, had been instrumental during his tenure in building the Milano Senior Center, restoring Memorial Hall, and reopening the Department of Conservation and Recreation pool.

Lyons served as mayor from 1993 until 1997, when he took over as head of the state Registry of Motor Vehicles, and later served as interim mayor in 2001.
