Two area field hockey players were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Dec. 11.
East Bridgewater High's Jessica Roberts was selected to the 2006 Penn Monto/NFHCA All-American first team. Walpole High's Tacy Zysk was selected to the second team.
Roberts and Zysk were the only players from Massachusetts to receive the national honor.
Roberts, a 2006 Globe All-Scholastic, played midfield and collected 101 goals and 48 assists in four seasons at East Bridgewater. East Bridgewater earned back-to-back titles in the Patriot League and the South Shore League and she will play field hockey at Boston College next year.
Zysk, a forward, was selected the Globe's Division 1 player of the year. Her 28 goals and 20 assists this season made her the third leading scorer in Massachusetts. She also helped Walpole end its season undefeated with a Division 1 state title.
She will attend Brown University next year.
Bridgewater State's Cuddihy named player of the week
Tom Cuddihy of Scituate put on a scoring clinic in the first few games of the men's basketball season at Bridgewater State, earning himself the honor of being named the Massachusetts State College Athletic Association men's basketball player of the week on Dec. 11.
Cuddihy, a junior guard, scored more than 20 points in three consecutive games, including 28 points in a 82-73 win against Plymouth State on Dec. 7.
He has helped Bridgewater State begin its season 5-1, its best starts since the 1998-99 season. He has averaged 20.2 points a game in that span, and has completed 22 of 50 shots from 3-point range.
Bridgewater State will next play Babson College tomorrow in the first round of the Surf City Classic at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif.
The MSCAA also selected Westfield State forward Curtis Gadles of Pembroke, Framingham State guard Bill Carey of Abington, and Worcester College guard Ryan Frassica of Brockton as honorable mentions.
Gadles, a Cardinal Spellman graduate, scored 42 points and 21 rebounds in two games. Carey, an Abington High graduate, scored 21 points in a game against St. Joes. And Frassica, a Brockton graduate, had a team-high 16 points against Nichols College.
