Nurses reach tentative pact
Nurses at St. Vincent Hospital reached a tentative four-year labor agreement early yesterday after a 15-hour negotiating session, averting a possible strike. The agreement must be ratified by the 700 members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association at the hospital. The nurses voted last month to authorize a strike if no agreement could be reached. Union official Carolyn Moore said she expected nurses to ratify the contract within the next couple of weeks. The agreement, which covers Jan. 2 to Dec. 31, 2009, calls for increasing staffing in some departments, and a 14.5 percent salary increase, the union said. Moore estimated that the changes could add roughly 20 new nursing jobs at the hospital. (AP)
