High school students charged after fight, discovery of bullets
Four students at a Dorchester high school were arrested by Boston police yesterday following a fight inside the building that led to the discovery that one of the students was carrying 15 bullets, authorities said.
No weapons were used during the fight inside the Jeremiah E. Burke High School, which involved three freshmen and two juniors, according to School Department spokesman Jonathan Palumbo.
The fifth student will be charged, police said.
Boston and school police rushed to the third floor of the Lawrence Avenue building shortly after 8 a.m. and found staff members breaking up a fight between five students.
Police found 15 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition on a 16-year-old from Dorchester whose name was not released because of his age. The juvenile told police that a friend had a gun matching the bullets.
Police later seized a 1995 sport utility vehicle driven to the school by Shane Clayton, 17, of Dorchester, who was arrested for participating in the fight.
Police said that when they asked Clayton for permission to search the SUV, he told them they had to get a search warrant. Police seized the car and were in the process of obtaining a warrant.
As a result of the fight, one student was taken to Boston Medical Center with what Palumbo described as minor eye injuries, and is expected to be charged later.
All five students face charges of affray and assault and battery, police said.
The 16-year-old also faces charges of illegal possession of ammunition.
