Car plunges to gravel site from ramp, killing man

One man was killed but another survived early yesterday when the car they were in careered off a highway exit ramp and plunged to the site of Boston Sand & Gravel, State Police said.

The survivor, who police identified as Albert Auprey, 20, of Manchester, N.H., called police from a cellphone after the crash shortly before 7 a.m., but he was so dazed he could not tell authorities where to find the car.

State Police, using cellphone tower signals, tracked the vehicle about a half hour later to the property, which is adjacent to Interstate 93.

Police could not say where on the ramp the car lost control or how far it fell. WBZ-TV reported that the car fell about 70 feet.

Auprey was listed yesterday in fair condition in the critical care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, said David Avruch, a hospital spokesman.

The other crash victim, 20-year-old John T. Andersen, also of Manchester, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two men were the only occupants of the car. Police did not know which of the men was driving.

"There was significant damage to the car," said Sergeant Robert Bousquet, a State Police spokesman.

The car, a 1999 Toyota Camry, was on an exit ramp that links Interstate 93 north to the Tobin Bridge when the driver lost control.

The car went over a concrete barrier on the right shoulder of the road, police said.

Bousquet could not say whether the two men were found inside the car.

The right lane of the ramp, which is known as exit 27, was closed for five hours yesterday while authorities investigated.
