Toy causes classroom distraction

WEYMOUTH -- Webkinz toys are not welcome at Wessagussett Primary School. The plush toy animals -- described by some as "Beanie Babies on steroids" -- are the latest fad for the elementary school set. Stuffed animals made by Ganz, they come with a code that lets children log into the Webkinz World website and play computer games, many involving shopping and earning "KinzCash."

Wessagusset principal Jean McLean sent a letter to her pupils' homes that asked children to leave behind the Webkinz, and other toys, when they go to school. "We're in the education business, not the toy business," McLean said. "It was distracting." She said she has had 100 percent compliance with the request: "I haven't heard a peep out of anyone. The kids have been great. In fact, several of them have said to me that they're glad their toys are safe at home and not getting mixed up with anyone else's. Things are back to normal."
