A 22-year-old East Boston man died yesterday of injuries sustained when he was assaulted Monday night, according to police. Frank Dillon, who was both stabbed and shot, sustained multiple head wounds in the attack on Marion Street and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. Police said he died of the stab wounds. They have not identified a suspect in the case.
3 accused of trying to mail cocaine
Three men were arrested Friday in connection with trying to mail several kilograms of cocaine to Boston addresses, according to the Boston Police Department. Working with the State Police and US postal inspectors, officers from the Boston Police Drug Control Unit uncovered three packages containing three kilograms each that were shipped to three addresses, police said. Carlos Paniagua , 33 , of Roxbury, Jose Paredes , 32 , of Boston, and Elias Maldonado , 34 , of Puerto Rico, were charged with trafficking , authorities said.CAMBRIDGE
Protesters greet Gonzales at Harvard
US Attorney Alberto Gonzales was greeted by student protesters yesterday when he attended a luncheon celebrating his 25th reunion at Harvard Law School. About 12 to 15 students wearing orange jumpsuits with black hoods chanted "resign," "torture," and "I don't recall," as Gonzales posed with classmates on the steps of the law library for a class photo. The chants referenced US treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and Gonzales's recent testimony before Congress regarding the dismissal of eight US attorneys. The protesters later followed Gonzales into the library's main reading room. Mike Armini, a Harvard Law School spokesman, said the protest did not disrupt the reunion.GRAFTON
Cats killed in blaze at 2-family home
Four cats died when a fire destroyed a two-family home in Grafton. The blaze began shortly after 10 p.m. Friday and was not extinguished until after 6 a.m. yesterday, said Michael Gauthier, chief of the Grafton Fire Department. No one was home in either apartment when the fire broke out . The second floor was completely engulfed in flames by the time trucks arrived Friday, Gauthier said. The first floor received mostly water damage, but both floors are uninhabitable, he said. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.WALTHAM
Identity of body found in Charles sought
Law enforcement authorities are seeking the public's help in determining the identity of a man whose body was pulled from the Charles River yesterday afternoon in Waltham. Corey Welford, a spokesman for the Middlesex district attorney, said the body was that of a white man approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and just under 200 pounds. He was wearing size 10 shoes and dark Alexander Julian Colours pants. The body, which was discovered at about 1 p.m., was taken to the medical examiner's office in Boston, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Man held after officer is struck by truck
A 33-year-old homeless man is facing charges of attempted murder and cocaine possession after allegedly striking a Stoughton police officer with a pickup truck early Friday morning, police said. The man, Scott Santos, struck Officer Kevin Lima in Stoughton at about 3:40 a.m., then led authorities on a high-speed chase, police said. Santos was able to elude police, but Brockton officers caught up with him again 11 hours later in that city, arresting him after a brief foot chase. Santos was charged with attempted murder, possession of cocaine, receiving stolen property, assault and battery on a police officer, and eight motor vehicle violations. Lima suffered minor injuries to his arm, police said.HYANNIS
The Cape Cod Times to cut 12 positions
The Cape Cod Times announced it will cut 12 positions through layoffs and buyouts as it deals with declining advertising revenues. The newspaper will lay off the equivalent of 4.5 full-time customer service workers. The paper said it expects about eight employees from various departments to accept voluntary buyouts. The Times is one of eight daily newspapers owned by the Ottaway newspaper chain, based in Campbell Hall, N.Y. Ottaway, which employs about 2,000 people, is eliminating 67 positions through layoffs and buyouts, said spokesman Ken Hall.
