Kerry, Kennedy hope to host Briton
If the man expected to be Britain's next prime minister gets the job, the Union Jack could join Old Glory on the mast of the Kennedy sailboat docked in Hyannis Port. Gordon Brown, the likely successor to Tony Blair, is apparently a big fan of Cape Cod. Brown, chancellor of the exchequer, spent part of his honeymoon on the Cape and had been a frequent visitor since. US Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry, Democrats of Massachusetts -- anchors of the Cape and Islands summer set -- told the Cape Cod Times they hope to host Brown. Brown and his wife, Sarah, "are two of our best friends on the Cape," Kennedy said in a statement. Speaking for his sailboat, Kennedy also said, "Mya can't wait to take the Prime Minister for a sail." (AP)

University to slash pollution emissions
Southern New Hampshire University leaders said yesterday the school would cut pollution emissions by a margin equal to taking 2,100 cars vehicles off the road. Paul LeBlanc, university president, told graduates their school had partnered with PPM Energy's Maple Ridge Wind Farm in New York. The partnership will let the school become carbon neutral within two years. The 15-year plan also is expected to stabilize energy bills and could save the university up to $2.6 million a year. "We have a lot of work to do, but this is an important milestone," LeBlanc said. (AP)

Woman celebrates her 112th birthday
A New Hampshire woman celebrated a big birthday recently -- her 112th. In what has become a tradition , friends and family gathered Thursday for Mary Jo Ray's birthday party at the Westmoreland nursing home. Relatives say Ray has never had a serious illness and is healthy for her age. Four generations of family gathered for the party, including Ray's 82-year-old son, Donald Ray, and 7-week-old great-great-granddaughter. Ray celebrated her birthday in clothes older than most people: She wore a sweater she knit 94 years ago at the age of 18. (AP)
