Don't neglect gifted children

I am absolutely in favor of a gifted and talented program for deserving students ("Classroom prospects dim for the best and the brightest," Globe South, May 24).

My son attended the Advanced Placement Center in Quincy. I can honestly say that he was challenged there, and would not have been [challenged] in a regular classroom. He is a very bright child, and he deserves every opportunity to meet and exceed his intellectual goals. In fact, we moved from Marshfield to Quincy for the program.

There are millions of dollars being spent on services for children with disabilities and handicaps, and I am in favor of those as well, so why wouldn't a child who has a gifted mind be challenged and celebrated?
