The best advice to customers is to try to avoid having to go to the post office before 10:30 a.m. ("Post office gripes? Please get in line," June 10, City Weekly).
Your local post office has to employ clerks to distribute mail to carriers in order to get them out to the street and deliver their mail.
It is imperative that the carriers leave on time. That is the main reason customers may see only one clerk at the window.
The Postal Service management is under great pressure to keep work hours at an absolute minimum. This is no different than in many organizations.
The US Postal Service is a self-sustaining organization that does not rely on tax contributions from citizens.
The largest reason the number of clerk employees has been reduced over the years is the impact of automation.
