Two children were found dead in a home in Roslindale last night, and their mother was being treated in the hospital with multiple stab wounds, police said.
"The two children that were in the house, those are the deceased parties," said Boston Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll, correcting earlier reports that a mother and child had been killed and a second child injured. "The mother was rushed to the hospital."
Her condition was not known, police said, releasing very few other details about what happened, including how the children died.
Shocked friends, who stood among neighbors near the scene last night, said the woman had called friends on Saturday to say goodbye, distraught over the recent loss of her job at Children's Hospital.
Juan Gonzalez said the woman called his girlfriend Saturday night and threatened to kill herself.
"She was desperate," he said, adding that she never threatened to hurt the children. "She was a nice person, she was a good mother. She loved those kids so much."
Monica Perez, Gonzalez's girlfriend, said the woman had just come back from a two-week vacation with her children to Florida but was still distraught.
On Saturday, she threatened suicide, Perez said.
"She said she was giving up," she said.
Perez said the woman was the sole provider for the two children and had been working as an executive assistant at Children's Hospital.
After making a check on the duplex on Maynard Street last night, Police Superintendent John Gallagher said, police found the house locked and forced out an air conditioner to get inside. There, they found the bodies.
According to police, a girl, 12, and a boy, 10, were found dead.
Neighbors stood by horrified, watching as police investigated around the brick and cream-colored duplex. Ellen Hoey, 54, said the neighborhood is quiet, with few problems.
"Nothing like this," said Hoey, a nurse. "Nothing this close to home, especially to a 10-year-old baby. It's unbelievable."
Gallagher said police might need help from witnesses to figure out what happened. Homicide investigators were still trying to obtain a warrant to search the house last night, he said.
"We may be looking for help from the public," Gallagher said. "It's an ongoing investigation, and we will continue to investigate throughout the night."
