DERRY, N.H. -- A pregnant Derry woman was killed when she got out of her boyfriend's moving pickup and was run over by the truck, police say.
Police are looking into how and why Tonya Wells, 24, got out of the truck Wednesday afternoon on Island Pond Road. Relatives say her boyfriend, who was driving, told them the couple was arguing.
Wells's baby daughter was delivered at Parkland Medical Center after the accident, then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The newborn was listed in critical condition overnight.
Wells's boyfriend, Joseph Stanley, 24, has not been charged, but the investigation continues. He told family members they were arguing and Wells opened the door. She threatened to jump out, but ended up falling out of the truck, they said.
"They were arguing," his uncle, Joshua Stanley of Londonderry, told The Eagle-Tribune. "She played like she was going to get out. He didn't think she was serious."
The death came three days before Wells's due date, family members said.
Relatives sobbed outside Parkland Medical Center as a helicopter took the baby to Boston, then they watched as Wells's body was put into a hearse.
Family members said the couple had been together for six years and have sons, ages 5, 3, and 1.
