A man was taken to Boston Medical Center yesterday after being shot multiple times with a handgun about 5 p.m. near the corner of Blue Hill Avenue and Lawrence Avenue in Dorchester, police said. Police did not identify the victim. He was reported to be in stable condition. After he was shot, the victim held his stomach and ran into the middle of Blue Hill Avenue, where he flagged down a police cruiser, said Roger McClain, 64, a neighborhood resident. "He was bleeding, but . . . I don't think he knew where he was shot," McClain said.
More charges for suspect in fatal stabbing
A man accused of a fatal stabbing during a fight in June in South Boston faces additional charges, after a grand jury indicted him yesterday on a charge of attempted murder. Bernard Piscopo, 38, is accused of stabbing Thomas Browne, 24, three times in the back and shoulder during a fight June 17 at The 6 House bar. Piscopo has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in district court in the death of Browne's friend, Adam Rich, 26. According to the Suffolk district attorney's office, Rich and another man were thrown out of The 6 House after getting in a fight with Piscopo and several other people. Rich came back into the bar and punched Piscopo in the face, knocking him off his feet, prosecutors said. Piscopo grabbed a knife, stood up, and stabbed Browne and Rich. Rich died of his stab wounds, prosecutors said Piscopo is scheduled to be arraigned today in Suffolk Superior Court on charges that also include second-degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.CAMBRIDGE

State orders single-lane bridge closed
Commuters in Northampton will have to find an alternative to the Clement Street Bridge. Acting on advice from state highway officials, the city blocked off the single-lane span over the Mill River Friday. The bridge will be closed until repairs are complete, which could take up to a year. The bridge, first built in the 1890s, is the first in Massachusetts to be ordered closed since the Aug. 1 bridge collapse in Minneapolis that killed at least nine people. Northampton Public Works Director Edward Huntley said an inspection of the Clement Street Bridge by the state in February found that supporting trusses had been weakened by rust. (AP)KEENE, N.H.
Driver in crash that killed 1 surrenders
The driver of a dry-cleaner's van involved in a collision with another vehicle in January, in which the driver of the car was killed, turned himself into authorities yesterday after failing to appear in court to answer charges stemming from the accident. The driver of the car, Kathleen Barrett, 47, of Swanzey, was critically injured and died at a hospital. Henri Pletzner, 34, of Winchester suffered minor injuries. He was indicted July 23 by a Cheshire County grand jury on one count of negligent homicide and one count of reckless conduct, both of which are felonies and carry a sentence of up to seven years in prison. Pletzner failed to appear at his arraignment Aug. 1. Yesterday, he was released on $20,000 bail and ordered to check in with Swanzey police on a daily basis. No trial date has been set.
