A 20-year-old woman was shot to death yesterday and three men were recovering from gunshot wounds after a late-night shooting in Mattapan, police said. Authorities did not identify the victims. The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Gladeside Avenue. All of the victims were taken to Boston Medical Center, where the woman was pronounced dead. Police had little information last night and said they had not made any arrests. It was the city's 47th homicide of the year, one more than at the same time last year.
Cyclist loses control of bike, dies
A man was killed yesterday when he lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into a concrete wall on the Massachusetts Avenue Connector on Frontage Road, police said. The victim, whose name was not released, was riding southbound on a 1993 Harley Davidson FXLR motorcycle when he crashed at 5:20 p.m., police said. Lowell woman dies in car crash
A 34-year-old Lowell woman died in an accident early Saturday after driving into a parked vehicle, police said. John J. Romero, chief of police in Lawrence, said Rosemary Carbonneau, 34, crashed into the parked vehicle at 1:53 a.m. on Water Street and struck a telephone pole. She was pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital. Two passengers, David Rivera, 36, of Lawrence, and a woman police have been unable to identify were hospitalized in critical condition. Two arrested in arson at factory
Two Clinton men were arrested yesterday and face charges in connection with the fire last month at an abandoned paper factory. John Rousseau and Michael Dreslinski, both 28, were charged with setting the fire and conspiracy. It took firefighters from 20 towns several hours to battle the July 30 fire, which burned an empty warehouse in the Usher Paper Mill. Fired worker details funds' use
A woman accused of stealing more than $1 million from her nonprofit employer said she used the money to pay for medical bills, vacations, and her daughter's wedding. "My daughter was getting married; I wanted her to have a nice wedding," said Linda Bevins, who has colon and lung cancer. "I had nothing; it all went to cancer. I thought I was going to die. I wanted to have a good life. I wanted my husband to have peace of mind." Bevins was fired in June from her job as a payroll supervisor for the Crotched Mountain Foundation, which runs a disabilities rehabilitation center in Greenfield. Searchers fail to find student
Searchers looking for clues in the disappearance of a nursing student recovered evidence but no sign of the woman. Wardens downplayed the significance of items found Saturday in woods in the vicinity of Kelly Gorham's apartment. The items will be analyzed by detectives. Gorham, a student at Southern Maine Community College, enjoyed the outdoors and sometimes hiked in woods near her home. She was last seen on Aug. 7 at her apartment. Gorham was reported missing when she didn't report to work the next day at Maine Medical Center. Her car was found at her apartment and her four dogs were inside, police said.
