Officer's husband arrested in fight

Police investigate Dorchester melee

One of the men arrested in a Saturday night fight that left seven people injured is the husband of a police officer who lives in the building where the melee broke out, Boston police said.

Eight people were arrested as officers broke up an engagement party on Eastham Street in Dorchester, where more than 200 people were celebrating. Police said they were forced to use batons and pepper spray on guests, who refused to leave the party and began throwing bottles and punches at the officers. Three officers and four partygoers were injured during the fight.

Guests told the Globe that police charged through the house, where children were playing, and waved batons at revelers.

Police did not identify which of the suspects was the husband of Officer Antonette Cabral, who lives on the second floor, attended the party, and was getting ready for work at the time of the incident, according to a police report. Cabral could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said officers treated Cabral's husband the same as other suspects, who were arrested on charges that included disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest.

"Each arrest that resulted from that incident was handled according to standard procedure," Driscoll said.

Police officials are reviewing the incident to determine whether officers responded appropriately.
