Contractors need watching

I was glad to see the complaint about Ciccone & Sons' work in the Fenway area. ("In the Fenway, a Little Dig causes big brouhaha," City Weekly, Sept. 30).

They deserve the criticism. They came in early Monday morning with jackhammers and dug up sidewalks on Mass. Ave., Clearway Street, Edgerly Road, Norway Street, and probably others that I did not witness. Their work is shoddy: They did not sweep up the debris of large and small pieces of concrete that covered the areas surrounding the dug-out spaces. The debris was hazardous to pedestrians and forced us to walk in the road. Some repairs lingered well over a week before workmen came back to finish the work.

I'm again disappointed in the selection and monitoring of contractors by the city of Boston.

Vets need more health facilities
As a disabled World War II veteran with limited walking ability, I have depended on the West Roxbury campus for all my medical care for years. ("Everything is on the table as VA reviews healthcare setup," City Weekly, Sept. 30.) What I have received has been superior in every instance, including major and minor operations and clinic care.

A few times, I have had to go to the Jamaica Plain facility. Parking has been a problem and the walk to and through the huge lobby exacerbates my problems. At West Roxbury, parking has rarely been a problem at the handicapped area.

The suggestion that after closing the West Roxbury campus, it could be leased for a megamall is ridiculous. The last thing this area needs with its many malls is another mall. There are a number of huge vacant buildings that have been vacant for a number of years.

What we need are more and better facilities for the huge number of newly disabled vets.

Please, a little sanity and common sense.
