Flight patterns target noise near Logan

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved new flight patterns aimed at reducing noise above neighborhoods around Logan International Airport. According to the FAA, the new rules will require aircraft to fly at higher altitudes along the North and South Shore approaching the airport. Many of the 55 communities included in the 25-nautical-mile area under study by the FAA will see reduced noise under the plan, the agency said yesterday. At least one community, Marshfield, has contended that the plans would increase noise over the town.

Man accused of lewdness at courthouse
A 48-year-old convicted sex offender is to be arraigned today on charges he exposed himself in a women's restroom of the Cambridge courthouse yesterday. Malcolm Maker of Boston will face charges including disorderly conduct, open and gross lewdness, and indecent exposure, said Corey Welford, spokesman for the Middlesex district attorney. Prosecutors allege that a female saw Maker looking at her from inside a restroom stall and that another woman said he exposed himself to her. One of the witnesses alerted troopers in the State Police offices next door to the restroom. They arrested Maker in the restroom, Welford said.

Arraignment set in stabbing of mother
A Lynn man is charged with fatally stabbing the mother of his two children. Authorities say Patrick Waweru, 28, stabbed Esther Kinyanjui, 31, on Monday night and then tried to overdose on pills. Kinyanjui was pronounced dead at North Shore Medical Center in Salem. Waweru was taken to Lynn Union Hospital, where he was arrested yesterday. The victim's sister, Margaret Kinyanjui, 27, was also injured in the attack. She was treated at North Shore Medical Center and released. Waweru is scheduled to be arraigned today in Lynn District Court if his medical condition allows. (AP)

Shooting victim identified as R.I. man
A Rhode Island man was identified yesterday as the person found shot to death on a Foxborough highway Monday. The victim was Carlos Gomez, 29, of Central Falls, according to a spokesman for Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating. Gomez was found on Green Street (Route 106) under the Interstate 95 overpass about 12:30 a.m. Anyone with information in the slaying is asked to call Foxborough police at 508-543-4343 or State Police at 508-820-2121. Keating's office said the killing was the town's first since 1996.

DARTMOUTH

Police search for missing UMass student
Dartmouth police and law enforcement at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth are searching for a senior who was last seen Friday. Neo Babson Maximus, also known as Charles M. Allen Jr., was last seen about 3 a.m. in the area of College Lane in North Dartmouth, Dartmouth police said. Police do not suspect foul play, but Maximus has a history of medical issues, which they said may have contributed to his disappearance. Maximus is described as a white male, about 6 feet tall, with a slim build, light-brown hair, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing sneakers and dark sweat pants with a red stripe and carrying a white, long-sleeve shirt. Anyone with information is asked to call Dartmouth police at 508-910-1735.

MEDFORD

Suspect is indicted in slaying of woman
A Medford man has been arrested in the slaying of a woman who was found beaten to death in her home last year. Tom Evans was indicted by a grand jury Monday on a first-degree murder charge and was arrested the same day, the Middlesex district attorney's office said. He was arraigned yesterday in Middlesex Superior Court. Evans is accused of killing Paula Doherty, 48, who was found dead in her Medford home with head injuries in October 2006.

NEW BEDFORD

Body of missing ferry passenger found
The body of a Fairhaven man who disappeared while on a ferry from New Bedford to Martha's Vineyard last month has been recovered. Walter Tyler's body washed ashore over the weekend in Tisbury. Police Chief Gary Souza of Fairhaven said the 27-year-old Navy veteran had on the same clothes he was wearing when he boarded the ferry Sept. 24. Souza said foul play has been ruled out. (AP)
