Newburyport: On Saturday, the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist Church will sponsor the Concert Against Hunger to benefit local food kitchens serving increasing numbers of needy residents in the lower Merrimack Valley. The concert, in the church sanctuary at 26 Pleasant St., will feature flamenco guitarist John Tavano and avant-garde cellist Kristen Miller, 7 to 8 p.m., followed by an intermission with desserts, beverages, and a raffle. Singer and songwriter Teresa Storch and the bluegrass band, Pine Hill Ramblers, are to perform afterward. Admission is a minimum $15 donation. Beverly: The North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra's 60th anniversary season begins Sunday with a 3 p.m. concert at First Baptist Church, 221 Cabot St. The program includes Albinoni's "Adagio in G minor," Respighi's "Church Windows," and the Saint-Saens' "Organ Symphony," featuring organist Ray Cornils. Newburyport: Writers and Actors INK, presents "Random Acts 5," Nov. 10, 8 p.m., at Firehouse Center for the Arts, 1 Market Square. It is an evening of short plays written, cast, rehearsed, and performed as staged readings in just 24 hours. Randomly paired playwrights begin writing short plays (10-15 minutes long) Friday night. VETERANS PROGRAM

Beverly: Herrick House assisted living, on the campus of Beverly Hospital at 85 Herrick St., will host a special program honoring veterans Nov. 8, 2:30-4 p.m., with Posting of Colors - ROTC, and remarks by Mayor William Scanlon, state Representative Mary Grant, and the city's veterans agent, Jerry Guilebb. A short program is planned to salute those who have served in the military. Refreshments will be served. Parking and van transport will be available from the Beverly Council on Aging. Free.
