REVERE - The Nahant Avenue apartment was supposed to be a haven for Jose Hernandez to rest while he waited for a ride home from his sister, after his overnight job delivering Chinese food in South Boston.
Before, he would wait for almost two hours outside Revere Beach T Station, but his family worried that something bad would happen to him there.
It turned out that the apartment was more dangerous.
Authorities said Hernandez, a 34-year-old immigrant who had a wife and two children in his native El Salvador, was stabbed to death inside the apartment at 4 a.m. yesterday, during a party in the triple-decker.
Another man was also stabbed, but is in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital. Police, who did not release his name, said he is not a suspect.
Police arrested Jose Moz, 27, of East Boston in connection with the stabbing. He is to be arraigned Monday in Chelsea District Court on murder charges. Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney's office said Moz and the victim both attended a party at the house early yesterday, but Wark declined to comment on a motive or what may have led to the stabbing.
State Police scoured the apartment where Hernandez usually stayed after work. A close friend of Hernandez's rented the second floor, and other friends would often stay there also, the victim's family said.
Investigators, wearing white booties over their shoes, followed a trail of blood from the front door, down a sidewalk, and around a corner, where Hernandez's family huddled yesterday afternoon, cried, and waited for answers.
The trail of blood was apparently left by the second man who was stabbed. He staggered from the apartment into a nearby supermarket, authorities said.
Olga Hernandez, 32, the victim's sister, said yesterday: "It was his friend's house. He stayed there a lot, even on the weekends." She said she talked with her brother on the evening before he was stabbed, and he told her that the routine would be the same, that he would call her in the morning from the house.
But Olga Hernandez said she never received the call and that was when she called the apartment.
She said several of her brother's friends, staying at the apartment, told her not to worry, that Jose would stay there a bit longer and that they would drive him home.
"Now, he's dead," she said.![]()
