Darrion Carrington was waiting inside a Chinese restaurant in Dorchester for his takeout order when an assailant burst in and shot the 18-year-old several times, killing him.

Carrington, who police said yesterday was the city's second homicide of 2008, died Monday night about a block from his home on St. Mark's Road, where a neighbor said his mother lives.

"That's tragic," said the neighbor, Xheni Papargjir, 20, when she heard of the killing.

Papargjir said the mother, whose name she did not know, told her a few weeks ago that her son would be coming home after having been away. Papargjir did not know where Carrington had been.

" 'My son is coming back for Christmas time," ' she recalled her neighbor telling her.

Records filed in Dorchester District Court indicate that Carrington had been sentenced to 18 months in Suffolk County House of Correction for unlawful possession of a firearm, following a June 2006 arrest.

He and four other people were in a red station wagon on Norfolk Street when police pulled them over. They were arrested after officers found marijuana, $1,000 worth of crack cocaine, and a silver revolver, according to a police report. The drug charges against Carrington were later dismissed. He was credited 152 days for time served and released in December.

Elaine Driscoll, spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department, said his killing did not appear to be random. She declined to say whether his past may have been connected to the shooting.

"This is a very active investigation," she said. "Because of that, it wouldn't be appropriate to speculate about a potential motive right now." She said police are looking for witnesses and there is no description of the shooter.

Employees at the Dorchester Avenue restaurant, Canton House, declined to comment.

Carrington had been a student at Dorchester High School, according to court records. Police ordered him to stay away from a teacher after he disrupted a school assembly and threatened the teacher in April 2006, according to the records. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation and ordered to take anger management classes, according to records. His family could not be reached for comment.

"We've heard of shootings in Dorchester, but not in this neighborhood," Papargjir said.

The Chinese restaurant is on a busy commercial strip surrounded by small businesses. Across the street, parishioners at St. Mark's Church said they were horrified by the shooting.

"I want to cry," said Judy Greeley, church secretary, who made the sign of the cross upon hearing the news. "It's a shame."
