Two young people were killed in Acton yesterday after the car they were riding in slammed into a stone wall, flew into the air, and hit a utility pole that snapped in half and fell on them, Acton police said.

The driver of the 1996 Mercury Sable lost control and hit the wall at a curve on Parker Street around 1 p.m. yesterday.

The force of the impact launched the vehicle, roof-first, into a utility pole, said Lieutenant Thomas Rogers.

Police, fire, and emergency medical services responded to the scene and found the two victims dead, Rogers said. NStar cut power to the area, so that emergency workers could lift the utility pole out of the car.

The accident is still under investigation by the Acton Police Department and a Massachusetts State Police accident reconstruction team, Rogers said.

Preliminary findings suggested that high speed and the car's two badly worn front tires may have contributed to the crash, he said.

The identity of the victims, who Rogers said were between the ages of 18 and 23, was not being released last night pending notification of their families.
