A 22-year-old Roxbury woman was seriously wounded yesterday in a daytime shooting near her family's home in Mattapan, police and neighbors said.

The woman, whom police would not identify, was shot on Delhi Street about 1:40 p.m. She was rushed to Boston Medical Center, police said, and was expected to survive.

Police released few details about the shooting and said they were searching for the assailant.

In an interview last night, Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said the victim was not cooperating with investigators.

"The Boston police believe this is not a random incident," she said.

After the shooting, police closed off Delhi Street and nearby Violet Street. Officers and detectives used dogs to search the area and went door-to-door asking neighbors what they saw and heard.

A Violet Street resident said he was on his computer when he heard two loud bangs and realized they were gunshots when police showed up at his door asking if he had seen the shooting.

Neighbors said the house where the woman's family lives has been the target of violent acts in the past. They said the house had been "shot up" before.

"It's always that house," said one neighbor who did not want to be named for fear of retaliation.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call 617-343-4470 or text "tip" to 27463 (crime) to remain anonymous.
