Police surrounded several buildings inside a Roslindale housing complex yesterday afternoon, searching for a suspect who shot two people. After a four-hour sweep through several of the red-brick buildings, police took three people into custody for questioning.

Police did not release the names of the victims, but said they were a male teenager and a woman believed to be in her 30s, and they were in stable condition at local hospitals. The teenager suffered a chest wound, and a bullet grazed the woman's neck.

The Phineas Bates Elementary School is located across Beech Street from the complex. School had been dismissed, but some students were still being picked up by parents as the incident unfolded.

Authorities were called to the area shortly before 2 p.m., Police Superintendent Daniel Linskey said. Police left the area at about 6:30 p.m. A suspect had not yet been arrested, police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said.

The area was the scene of carnage in January when a man was killed after an unidentified assailant shot at a limousine coming back from a funeral a few blocks away from the school.
