LAWRENCE - Maybe it's not all about Hollywood after all.
The Merrimack Valley Christian Film Festival is returning to Lawrence this week, highlighting new Christian-theme films that are making their mark on mainstream America. The free festival, which runs today through Sunday at Showcase Cinemas 1-6, will feature premieres of movies including "The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry" and "Another Perfect Stranger." Also showing are "Facing the Giants" and "Time Changer." Films will be screened more than once.
Festival organizer Tom Saab said the event, now in its 16th year, has attracted as many as 13,000 people in the past. "Some people [in New England] won't go to church to hear the word of God," he said. "But they'll go hear it at the movies."
There will be a children's matinee, with screenings of animated films. Directors and actors from the films featured at the festival also will be on hand.
Saab said he has been spreading the word about the event at area churches. He said the Merrimack Valley Christian Film Festival is among the more popular ones in the country. This is the eighth year Lawrence has hosted the event.
