Senate President Therese Murray says a proposed $1 tax increase on a pack of cigarettes has strong support in the Senate. Murray says the extra revenue would help cover the higher than expected costs of Massachusetts' landmark healthcare law. House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi proposed the cigarette tax increase. Governor Deval Patrick said he wants to see the bill before deciding whether to sign it. The cost of the healthcare law is soaring in part because more people than expected have signed up for subsidized care. Republicans are planning a news conference today to oppose tax increases, including the cigarette tax increase. Murray, DiMasi, and Patrick are all Democrats. (AP)KNOX COUNTY, OHIO

Professor's wife charged with embezzling
The wife of a prominent Dartmouth College computer researcher has been charged with embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from a California church. Lean Granger, 45, was arrested 11 days ago in Hanover, where she lives with her husband, Richard Granger Jr. California authorities charged her with forgery and theft from a church in Newport Beach, Calif., where she was the bookkeeper and office manager before the couple moved east. Newport Beach police spokesman Evan Sailor said yesterday that the church discovered after she left that roughly $300,000 was missing. Lean Granger is listed as Cheryl Lean Granger in court records in California, where she was returned during the weekend. Richard Granger, a former professor at the University of California, Irving, came to Dartmouth in 2006 as the first director of the Neukom Institute of Computational Science at the Ivy League school and a professor of psychological and brain sciences.
