Bike lanes are striped, on-road lanes, adjacent to vehicular travel lanes.

Cycle tracks or sidepaths are separated from the road by a curb, an elevation change, or other buffer. Cambridge has tried them on Vassar Street.

Sharrows, also known as "shared lane markings," are often chevron-shaped arrows with bike logos, painted on the pavement, alerting drivers to slow down.

Bike boulevards are low-car-volume, low-speed streets with enhancements like raised intersections and traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps.
