BOSTON
A year-old child fell out of a second-story window and onto the ground yesterday on Elm Hill Avenue in Dorchester. Neighbors found the baby at about 5 p.m. The baby's mother was putting away groceries at the time, police said. A private security guard in the neighborhood had warned the child's family about the baby hanging out the window a few weeks ago, said Eddy Chrispin, a Boston police spokesman. The baby was taken to Boston Medical Center with bruises, but is expected to survive. Police officers notified the Department of Social Services about the fall, which is under investigation to determine if criminal charges will be filed.

Groups press to keep health programs
The American Cancer Society and other groups are asking Governor John Lynch to preserve funding for smoking cessation and cancer screening programs. The state had planned to spend $2 million on the programs, but that total was trimmed to $250,000 as part of the governor's broad budget cuts. The cancer society is fighting back with ads arguing that this is no time to retreat in the fight against cancer. The bulk of the money was supposed to be used for tobacco prevention and cessation programs, but plans also called for free screening for colorectal, breast, and cervical cancers. (AP)
