PEMBROKE
NEW TOWN CLERK ELECTED - Assistant Town Clerk Maureen Robinson was defeated Saturday in a three-way race for the $60,000 per year position of town clerk. Mary Ann Smith, a longtime assistant in the Building Department, defeated Robinson and Linda MacDonald in the annual town election. The results were: Smith, 933 votes; Robinson, 813; and MacDonald, 582. In a three-way race for two selectmen's seats, incumbent Arthur Boyle and Police Lieutenant Willard Boulter defeated Lew Stone. Turnout on Saturday was the highest in about 10 years for a town election - about 20 percent of registered voters. - Christine Legere

MANSFIELD
AIR CLASSIC TO LAND IN MANSFIELD - Pilot Kathleen McDonald, dubbed "The Flying Nonny" by her grandchildren, has spent more than a year helping to organize the women's Air Race Classic, a cross-country flight event now in its 32d year. The finish line is at the Mansfield Municipal Airport. Racers take off from Bozeman, Mont., June 24, and land 2,400 miles away in Mansfield June 27. The 30 women expected to enter have nine designated stops. People who want to see the planes land should come to the airport from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 27, McDonald said. - Christine Legere
