Dan Vassallo of Wilmington was the top local finisher in the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. The 25-year-old completed the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston in 2 hours 25 minutes 10 seconds. The next four: Christopher Hamel, 24, Wilmington (2:37:39); Mark A. Hudson, 31, Reading (2:38:02); Chris Spinney, 48, Arlington (2:39:05); and Mike Killam, 25, Woburn (2:39:45); The top five women: Carol Rodriguez, 25, Arlington (3:12:51); Lauren Caputo, 25, Belmont (3:15:22); Judi Chiavetta, 41, Arlington (3:17:15); Erin M. Wyner, 26, Medford (3:19:30); Karen Mahoney-Ringheiser, 44, Carlisle (3:20:32).
Acton-Boxborough Regional senior Andre Peter Tongo has committed to play basketball at Division 2 Stonehill College. A team captain, Tongo was named the Dual County League's Large School MVP in leading the Colonials to the Division 1 North tournament. The 6-foot-1-inch guard was a 1,000-point career scorer and is headed to a Stonehill program that finished 18-14 in the Northeast-10 this past season.
Former Methuen High standout Anthony Gallardo emerged as the catalyst for the University of Massachusetts at Lowell's men's golf team last fall. Next weekend, Gallardo will lead the River Hawks at the NCAA East/Northeast Super Regional tournament. Gallardo averaged a team-low 75.36 over seven tournaments and 14 rounds in the fall. This spring he is averaging a 76.09, shooting in the 70s in all but two rounds.
Several Merrimack Valley Conference runners and teams were well represented at this year's Nashua North Invitational Track and Field Meet. Pacing the action for the boys were Chelmsford runners Ryan Buckley and Chris Brown, who finished first and second in the 800-meter run and helped set a meet record in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3 minutes 29 seconds.
Bentley College senior Beth Gendron tallied her 100th career point with a 4-goal performance as the Falcons toppled American International, 17-1, last week. The former Tyngsborough High lacrosse captain led the Falcons to a 7-9 mark in the regular season, 6-4 in the Northeast-10. In four seasons, Gendron has amassed 103 points on 86 goals and 17 assists.
Belmont Hill School product Brian McCafferty of Lexington has been named a cocaptain of the 2008-2009 Harvard University men's hockey team. The 6-foot, 205-pound blue-liner has played in 95 career games for the Crimson and ranks second among active players with 47 career points.![]()
