ASTRONOMY

Topsfield: Celebrate National Astronomy Day with the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club on Saturday, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, 87 Perkins Row. The program begins with a presentation on constellations, galaxies, and other celestial objects. Afterward, weather permitting, members of the club will show the beauty of the night sky through their telescopes. For adults and families with children 6 years and older. FUND-RAISER

Gloucester: The Open Door/Cape Ann Food Pantry's annual Empty Bowl Dinner will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Cruiseport Gloucester at the Gloucester Marine Terminal, 6 Rowe Square. Guests get to choose and keep a soup bowl handcrafted for the event. The meal is soup, bread, and a cookie. The bowl is a reminder that somewhere someone's bowl may be empty. Music and prizes will be provided by WBOQ-FM (North Shore 104.9). A silent auction offers unique bowls created by local artists. A complimentary trolley car ride will be available from Good Harbor Beach to the event. Proceeds benefit the organization's food pantry and summer programs. Tickets at the door, $12. 978-283-6776.

MUSIC

Marblehead: The Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor will honor Marblehead veterans and those in active service on Armed Forces Day, May 17, 7:30 p.m. with a Star Spangled Pops concert at Abbot Hall, 188 Washington St. The evening of patriotic music will be performed by The Hillyer Festival Orchestra under the direction of Dirk Hillyer. Judge Joseph Dever will narrate "The Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland. $35 for floor seats, $25 for balcony seats. Advance tickets at Arnould Gallery & Framery, The Garden Collection, National Grand Bank, and The Marblehead Reporter office. Tickets will also be on sale at the door, subject to availability. THEATER

Saugus: Pirates, police, young lovers, and an eccentric major general are caught up in a merry-go-round of moral dilemmas in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance," presented by The Theatre Company of Saugus. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., next Sunday at 2 p.m., and May 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. at Belmonte Middle School on Dow Street.
