Two Massachusetts men are under investigation for allegedly robbing, or attempting to rob, nine banks over 15 days, a binge that ended with their arrest in New Hampshire over the weekend, authorities said yesterday.

Jeffrey R. Monico, 28, of Beverly, and Kevin E. Maloney 28, of Saugus, were identified by fingerprints each allegedly left on the demand note recovered by police from the Sovereign Bank branch on Central Street in Ipswich, said State Police spokesman David Procopio.

The Sovereign Bank theft occurred on April 28, 17 minutes after two men were rebuffed in attempts to rob a Bank of America branch in Beverly on Enon Street, said Procopio.

The note was taken from the Beverly bank but left behind in Ipswich, and it was studied by the State Police crime laboratory, he said. "They were able to lift two fingerprints from that bank note, one of which was identified as belonging to Monico and one belonging to Maloney," Procopio said.

The two men, based on other evidence developed by Trooper Shawn O'Neil, who is assigned to the FBI's Bank Robbery Task Force, were identified Friday and charged yesterday in Newburyport District Court with committing the Ipswich robbery.

The task force and police on the North Shore and in New Hampshire are also looking at whether the men were involved in at least eight other robberies beginning with an April 17 bank robbery in Danvers and ending on May 2 with the robbery of a Nashua credit union.

In all the robberies, the thieves showed notes to tellers and did not display weapons, authorities said.

The men were arrested by Nashua police at a hotel on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
