Third playground in Torie's memory

EASTON - The third playground honoring the memory of Torie Snelgrove is slated to be built in Easton next month.

Snelgrove, an East Bridgewater native and Emerson College student, was killed in October 2004, when police fired a crowd-control projectile into a group celebrating a Red Sox win. Snelgrove's family has donated more than $20,000 to build the playground in their daughter's memory.

The playground site - behind the former North Easton Grammar School on Main Street - was donated to the town by Douglas King, a businessman who converted the school to an office building.

Volunteers are needed to help build the playground on June 13 and 14; contact recreation director Jennifer Hruniak at 508-230-0650.

The first playground built in Snelgrove's memory is Torie's Place, at the Spring Street School in West Bridgewater, in 2006. Last year, the Snelgroves completed a playground, called Torie's Place Too, at the Gordon Mitchell Middle School in East Bridgewater.

The Victoria Snelgrove Memorial Fund was established shortly after Torie's death to enhance the lives of others. The fund provides yearly college scholarships to East Bridgewater students. The family has also given an endowment of $25,000 to Emerson College to be used for scholarships.
