Medford library supporter touts benefits of book sale

Every time she sees an advertisement for a used-book business, Medford resident Judy Marcella worries about the future of her library. That's because the Medford Public Library's semiannual book sale has seen a decrease in donations over the years from people who turn to the likes of Got Books, a for-profit, used-book seller.

Marcella, the Friends of the Medford Public Library's publicity secretary, said that many people don't realize where the money raised by the book sale goes.

"We just actually paid for books for every kindergarten student in the city of Medford," she said. "Without the funding, they wouldn't have been able to put a book in the hands of every student." She said she believes many people think the program is supported with city money.

This weekend's sale of donated books is also critical to maintaining other programs the Friends support, such as museum passes. The library uses proceeds from the sale to buy passes to several local museums.

Marcella is expecting an excellent turnout.

The book sale is open to members of the Friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, and to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The library is at 111 High St.
