An ounce of prevention...

Easy bicycle maintenance tips, courtesy of Justin Carter of Ace Wheelworks in Somerville (wheelworks.com).

Lube your bike's chain regularly. A good rule of thumb is once every couple weeks, and every time after riding in wet weather. Spin the pedals, drizzle on lubricant, let stand several minutes, and wipe off excess oil. "You're trying to lube inside each of those links," Carter said.

Don't let the chain get too dirty. Use a long-bristled, stiff nylon brush to get off grime. "It does a lot to make your bike run smoother."

Keep frame, cables, and gears clean. Learn to remove brake and derailleur cable housings and wipe off grit or salt buildup, then lubricate. "If there's rust and corrosion, it's time for a new cable."

Maintain proper tire pressure. "We see people riding around with way too little air in their tires."

Use grease. Boston's winter road salt can seize up parts. "Grease goes on every bolt on a bike. It makes everything work better."
