Dukakis's name graces splashy new building

Many politicians would go to great lengths to have their name plastered across a building.

But yesterday at The New England Center for Children's official dedication of the Michael S. Dukakis Aquatic Center, the former governor was his typical demure self.

"When they start naming buildings after you," Dukakis said, "you know you're on your way out."

About 200 people turned out for the dedication, which marked the first building in Massachusetts to bear the former governor's name. Among the attendees were Dukakis's wife, Kitty, Senator John F. Kerry, and Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray.

Dukakis became involved with the center, a Southborough-based school for autistic children, after he left office.

He recently cochaired the aquatic center's steering committee, helping to raise $5.5 million to build the facility. The center opened in February.

Yesterday's dedication fell on Dukakis's 45th wedding anniversary.

"I can't think of a better way for us to celebrate," the one-time presidential candidate told the audience.

At least one speaker hinted this probably wouldn't be the last building named after Dukakis, who served three terms as governor. But after the meeting Dukakis declined to guess what building might be next.

"That's not important to me," he said.
