Farmers market to open

The Food Project today will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Farmers Market in Lynn's Central Square. The event, which starts at noon, will include lunch for $3 per person. The market will be open every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 30. But tonight it will stay open until 6 to take part in Third Thursdays, a monthly event that aims to draw shoppers downtown. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. in the square. Tonight will feature the annual Lynn Youth Parade. - Kathy McCabe

MALDEN
HOUSING NONPROFIT GETS $150,000 - Housing Families Inc., a local nonprofit organization that develops and operates affordable housing and helps homeless families build their skills and earning power, has secured funding commitments totaling $150,000 from the state and the Bank of New York Mellon to support its Children and Family Program, which provides academic and emotional support for homeless school-age children and their families. Students in the program participate in one-on-one tutoring, individual counseling, and a therapeutic arts program. This is the third year in which state Representative Paul J. Donato and Senate Minority Leader Richard R. Tisei have successfully advocated in the Legislature for Housing Families aid. The state has earmarked $100,000 for the program; the Bank of New York Mellon contributed $50,000. - Brenda J. Buote

MELROSE
NEW PHYSICS TEACHER - When school opens this fall, students at Melrose High School will have a new physics teacher. David Carbonneau, who was teaching at Woburn High School, will fill the position, which was originally posted May 2. Carbonneau earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and a master's from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. - Brenda J. Buote

WINTHROP
ATHLETIC FEES DISCUSSION - The athletic subcommittee of the School Committee is scheduled to meet Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the E.B. Newton School, 45 Pauline St., to discuss the possibility of introducing an extracurricular activities fee. Recently the School Committee voted to raise sports fees in response to a failed override vote last month. Some members have suggested introducing a $100 fee per extracurricular activity, such as for mock trial and math club. - Katheleen Conti
