LECTURES
Gloucester: Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant St., is showing an exhibit of paintings by Rockport artist Oliver Balf through Sept. 14. Balf's watercolor "Lobsterman" (below) is included in the show. Newburyport: The Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge present a coffee house and lecture series with informative and entertaining programs held in the Visitor Center Auditorium, 6 Plum Island Turnpike. The lectures are free; no registration is necessary. Today, 7-8 p.m., Erika Spanger-Siegfried, Northeast climate project manager with the Union of Concerned Scientists, will talk about climate change and its potential impacts in Massachusetts during her lecture "Global Climate Change in the Northeast." July 31, 7-8 p.m., join William Fowler, a history professor from Northeastern University, to learn about the history of the coasting trade in Merrimack Valley and Newburyport in the lecture "There She Scoons': New England Coasting Schooners." Gloucester: The 2008 Summer Concert Series at Antonio Gentile Bandstand in Stage Fort Park begins Sunday. Six free outdoor concerts will be held Sundays at 7 p.m. Compaq Big Band begins the series with an evening of jazz favorites on Sunday. The Joey Scott Experience will perform contemporary favorites July 27. Acoustic bluegrass band Old Cold Tater performs Aug. 3. The Cape Ann Community Band takes the stage Aug. 10. The country and western John Penny Band will be at the bandstand Aug. 17. The series concludes Aug. 24 with an evening of rhythm and blues rock with horns with Overdrive. Free parking. 978-281-0543.
Newburyport: The 10th annual Yankee Homecoming River Boat BluesCruise on July 26 features Shirley Lewis and Sweet Willie D. with lead and slide guitarist J. Laite. Lewis, a BluesTrust Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, has enjoyed a musical career for more than 50 years, and has performed with legends such as B.B. King, James Cotton, and Pinetop Perkins. Also featured are bass guitarist Lee Lundy and percussionist Sergio Belotti. The sunset cruise departs at 7 p.m. aboard the Captain's Lady III at Plum Island Point.
